How the License Restoration Process Works
Step 1: Free Case Evaluation
We start with a thorough review of your driving record, substance abuse history, and current situation. We’ll tell you honestly whether you’re ready to file — or what steps you need to take first. There’s no fee for this initial consultation.
Step 2: Evidence Gathering & Preparation
This is where most people fail when they try to do it themselves. We help you compile the critical documentation: a current substance abuse evaluation from an approved evaluator, 3-6 strong support letters (we guide your letter writers on exactly what to include), proof of AA/NA attendance or other support group participation, drug screens and testing documentation, and any other evidence that supports your case.
Step 3: Petition Filing
We prepare and file your petition with the Secretary of State’s OHAO. Every document is reviewed for accuracy and completeness. A single error or omission can result in a denial.
Step 4: Hearing Preparation
We walk you through the types of questions the hearing officer will ask, how to present yourself, and what to emphasize. You won’t walk into that hearing room without knowing exactly what to expect.
Step 5: OHAO Hearing Representation
Attorney McNamee personally represents you at your OHAO hearing. We present your evidence, guide your testimony, and make the strongest possible case for why your license should be restored.
Step 6: Post-Hearing Follow-Up
After the hearing, we monitor your case through the decision process. If your license is restored (typically with an interlock device initially), we help you understand the conditions and next steps. If there’s a denial, we discuss appeal options immediately.

License Restoration FAQ
How long does the license restoration process take?
From start to finish, the typical timeline is 2-4 months. This includes gathering your evidence, filing the petition, and waiting for your hearing date.
Can I get my license back if I’ve been denied before?
Yes. Many of our clients come to us after a previous denial. A prior denial doesn’t prevent you from filing again, and we can often identify what went wrong the first time. You typically need to wait one year after a denial before re-petitioning.
Do I have to be completely sober to get my license restored?
Michigan requires you to demonstrate that your substance abuse problem is “under control and likely to remain under control.” Complete abstinence from alcohol and drugs, including marijuana, is the strongest position.
Will I have to get an interlock device?
In most cases, yes. Michigan typically restores your license with a restricted interlock requirement first (minimum 1 year). We also handle interlock removal petitions when you’re ready.
What if I live outside the Thumb area?
OHAO hearings can be conducted via video. We’ve represented clients from across Michigan.
What’s the difference between DAAD and OHAO?
They’re the same entity — Michigan renamed the Driver Assessment and Appeal Division (DAAD) to the Office of Hearings and Administrative Oversight (OHAO). The hearing process and requirements remain the same.
